The pope has donated a pair of scooters to an elderly couple in Rome who lost their mobility due to the consequences of diabetes and hypertension.

Vatican Radio says the scooters were delivered on Saturday by Monsignor Konrad Krajewski, the pope's chief alms-giver.

It says the couple has been housebound due to their ailments, and the woman recently had a leg amputated. The non-profit association Medicina Solidale, which helps disadvantaged people get access to medical care, was raising money to help the couple, but the pope beat them to the punch.

Lucia Ercoli of Medicina Solidale says that "the pope never stops amazing us," adding that "we feel less alone in our daily work."
