Argentina's Foreign Minister Susanna Malcorra says whether she is nominated as a candidate to be the next secretary-general of the United Nations "is in the hands of my president."

The former U.N. undersecretary-general and chief of staff to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, whose term ends on Dec. 31, acknowledged widespread rumors at U.N. headquarters that President Mauricio Macri will nominate her. But she said "I think it will be irresponsible from my side to comment."

Malcorra is attending several high-level meetings this week and was peppered with questions at an event Wednesday promoting the new U.N. goals for 2030 on whether she would become the 10th candidate for the world's top diplomatic post.

She told reporters that Latin America is looking at the issue and said "I love this organization."
