Egypt's Interior Ministry says militants have attacked a police vehicle with a rocket-propelled grenade in the restive northern part of the Sinai Peninsula, killing three policemen and wounding eight.

Tuesday's assault in the town of Sheikh Zuweyid is the latest in a series of attacks that have killed dozens of security forces since the beginning of this year. The ministry says the wounded have been taken to hospital.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, which bore the hallmarks of the Islamic State affiliate in Sinai. That branch has claimed responsibility for most of the attacks against Egyptian security forces.

Attacks on police and military forces have intensified since the July 2013 military ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.
