South African police say a young woman was murdered in similarly horrific circumstances and in the same place as a teenager whose 2013 death shocked even people accustomed to high levels of violent crime.

Police in Bredasdorp, a small town in South Africa's Western Cape province, say the body of a 22-year-old woman was discovered Saturday near the spot where Anene Booysen was raped and murdered three years ago. Booysen, 17, was gang-raped and left for dead. One man was sentenced to life in jail.

Police say the woman killed during the weekend was also raped and mutilated. A teenage male faces rape and murder charges.

South Africa has strict laws to prosecute sexual violence and has launched public education campaigns, but violent crime remains common.
