A Palestinian educator who won a million-dollar teaching prize in Dubai has returned to a hero's welcome in the West Bank, where she said "it's time for all kinds of violence to stop."

Hanan al-Hroub, 43, a primary school teacher in el-Bireh near Ramallah, spoke to a jubilant crowd Wednesday as she crossed the Jordanian border into the West Bank.

Judges with the Varkey Foundation's Global Teacher Prize on Sunday recognized her work in teaching non-violence via her book "We Play and Learn."

Her message comes amid five months of Palestinian attacks that have killed 28 Israelis. At least 182 Palestinians have died by Israeli fire, most said by Israel to be assailants.

Earlier this week, 40,000 Palestinian teachers suspended a nearly monthlong strike over low salaries.
