A Pakistani police officer says gunmen riding on a motorcycle have shot and killed an army officer in the northwestern city of Peshawar.

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack.

Abbas Khan says the assailants gunned down Lt. Col. Tariq Ghafoor near a mosque in an upscale neighborhood of the city on Friday. He says Ghafoor was getting out of his car to go to prayers when the drive-by shooting took place. The gunmen fled the scene.

The police are in pursuit and are searching the area to find the killers.

Pakistani Taliban spokesman Muhammad Khurasani says their men targeted the army officer.

The local Taliban have been waging a war against the state in Pakistan for over a decade, mainly targeting security forces, along with other targets.
