An American is under custody in Mexico in connection with the death of his girlfriend in the Caribbean resort city of Playa del Carmen over the weekend.
Federal police said John Loveless, 59, was detained at the Cancún airport before he was to board a flight to Atlanta.
Tamra Turpin, a 36-year-old woman from Union, Missouri, was found dead Wednesday afternoon in a condo the couple had rented. A forensic examination concluded she died of asphyxia by strangulation.
Turpin's sister, Jodi Mills, told the Associated Press the boyfriend informed her via text that she overdosed after an argument. According to Mills, Loveless also told her he canceled an initial call for an ambulance because Turpin was resting.
Mills said Loveless told her by Wednesday mid-afternoon that Turpin died. Mexican authorities, however, said the time of death was around 9 a.m.
Turpin was disabled due to an auto wreck in her teen years, which kept her from working. She didn’t marry and had no children.
