European Union lawmakers are urging the bloc's foreign policy chief to impose an arms embargo on Saudi Arabia over airstrikes and a naval blockade in Yemen.

The lawmakers called in a resolution Thursday for the EU's foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, "to launch an initiative aimed at imposing an EU arms embargo against Saudi Arabia."

The resolution was passed by 449 votes to 36, with 78 abstentions.

The lawmakers also expressed concern "at the airstrikes by the Saudi-led coalition and the naval blockade it has imposed on Yemen," saying that they have led to thousands of deaths.

The resolution is not binding on Mogherini or the EU member states.
