CITRUS HEIGHTS –  A woman found dead at the base of a laundry chute in the D Las Vegas hotel-casino Sunday was identified as 26-year-old Kalli Medina-Brown, police said.

"I just saw her like two weeks ago," Medina Brown's friend Alyssa Skinner said.

Skinner told FOX40 she was stunned that her good friend and former Wheatland High School classmate died during a trip to Vegas, since she was such a smart and careful young woman.

By all accounts, Medina-Brown's death was mysterious.

Authorities have not determined whether it was the result of a freak accident or foul play, but they say homicide detectives are investigating the incident as a suspicious death.

Skinner said Medina-Brown was happy and carefree the last time she saw her, and that she and her husband were high school sweethearts who were very much in love.

"I was so happy for their future and when I talked to her a couple of  weeks ago they were doing so great and she was so happy and it was wonderful. She just had a wonderful heart and soul and I and everyone else will miss her so much," Skinner said.

Medina-Brown's mother told FOX40 she had no comment.

Medina-Brown's mother-in-law referred FOX40 to the family's attorney, who has not yet returned our call.

FOX40 reached out to Medina-Brown's workplace, Forester, Purcell Stowell in Folsom. They said they could not expand on the police investigation, but wrote this about Medina-Brown:

"Kalli Rose Brown was a legal assistant to members of our firm for the better part of two years. Our clients truly benefited from her rare mix of wit, care, understanding and professional wisdom. As did we. On behalf of our work family here at Forester Purcell Stowell, we offer our most heartfelt sympathies to Kalli’s family and loved ones. She will be deeply missed."

D Las Vegas responded in writing as well, saying Medina-Brown's death was unfortunate, and that they are cooperating with law enforcement.
