Iran's official IRNA news agency is reporting that nine Iranian teachers have been released more than a week after they were detained in the United Arab Emirates over work permit issues.

Deputy Foreign Minister Hasan Qashqavi is quoted by IRNA Friday as saying that the teachers, who were detained in Al Ain, were released but provided no further details. Iran's state TV said late Friday that 22 Iranian teachers had been detained in the UAE.

The discrepancy could not immediately be clarified.

UAE officials had reportedly claimed that the teachers' work permits were only valid for Dubai, and not in the rest of the Gulf federation. They were taken into custody on Oct. 7.

Iran's foreign ministry had summoned the UAE's charge d'affaires to Tehran over the case.
