A leading member of the ruling Civic Platform party says it will not enter a coalition with the major opposition force after the Oct. 25 general elections.

Foreign Minister Grzegorz Schetyna said Friday that a coalition of Law and Justice with the Civic Platform is "impossible today."

Opinion polls show much greater support for the conservative opposition Law and Justice party over the pro-business Civic Platform. They also show that even if the Law and Justice wins the elections, it may fall short of a majority and need a coalition partner.

Once friendly, the two Solidarity-rooted parties fell out in 2005 following failed coalition talks in which Law and Justice was inviting Civic Platform into its government. It later found a partner in the farmers' Self-Defense party.
