Spanish transportation officials say high-speed train service throughout the entire region of Catalonia bordering France has been suspended after thieves apparently tried to steal rail infrastructure cable.

Railway infrastructure authority ADIF says in a tweet that service was halted Thursday morning between the key stretch of track between Tarragona and Figueres near the border with France after the attempted theft.

The Renfe train company that operates Spain's trains says in a tweet that passengers seeking to travel between Tarragona and Barcelona were being transported by bus.

Renfe and ADIF did not say when service might be restored.
