A community leader for a militia group allied to Mali's government says at least one person has been killed and four people were kidnapped in an attack by separatists in the north of the country.

Fahad Ag Mahmoud said Wednesday suspected Tuareg separatists came to the village in the Gao region in 20 vehicles and attacked late Tuesday. Mahmoud says they targeted family members of Tuaregs who are aligned with the government. Violence between the groups in August broke a peace accord signed by the parties and the government in June.

Insecurity in Mali's north has caused tensions among Tuaregs, some of whom support a separatist movement some the government.

Separatists and al-Qaida-affiliated extremists took control of northern Mali following a military coup in 2012, prompting a French-led military intervention.
