BENGHAZI, Libya – A member of Libya's internationally-recognized parliament and its media spokesman say the body has voted to extend its own mandate past the Oct. 20 deadline.
Essa al-Areibi and Faraj Abuhashim say 129 members of the 131-member parliament voted to extend the parliament's mandate until power is transferred to another elected body.
The mandate was set to expire on Oct. 20 under a political roadmap sketched out after the 2011 overthrow of longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi.
Libya is split between two rival governments, an internationally-recognized one in the East of the country and another supported by Islamist militias controlling the capital, Tripoli. The United Nations is pressing the two governments to form a national unity government, and has set an Oct. 20 deadline for a final agreement.
