Israeli police say five people have been arrested after a brawl broke out at a hospital treating a former Palestinian prisoner who recently ended a two-month hunger strike.

Police spokeswoman Luba Samri says the fight Wednesday erupted between relatives of Mohammed Allan, the former prisoner, and Israelis at the hospital. It was not immediately clear what sparked the clash.

Allan ended his 66-day hunger strike last week after Israel's Supreme Court suspended his detention without charge. Israel accuses Allan of links to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group. Allan is being treated in the Barzilai hospital in the southern city of Ashkelon.

Allan's protest against his detention had stoked tensions. Police on a number of occasions broke up demonstrations by his supporters and opponents outside the hospital.
