Police in Iraq's capital, Baghdad, say a suicide car bombing at a security checkpoint has killed eight people, including five civilians.

The attack took place Sunday at the Aden checkpoint in Baghdad's Khazimiyah district. Police say three checkpoint guards were killed in addition to the civilians passing through.

A local hospital official corroborated the casualty figure. Both spoke on condition of anonymity as they are not authorized to brief journalists.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for this attack. However, the Islamic State militant group is often behind attacks on checkpoints as it seeks to challenge Iraqi security forces amid intensifying battles in northern and western Iraq.
