An Afghan girl -- reportedly only 8 years old -- was detained in southern Afghanistan for wearing a suicide vest.

Authorities stopped the girl Sunday night as she approached border police in Helmand province, according to a BBC report.

The girl is believed to be the sister of a prominent Taliban commander who encouraged her to carry out the bombing, an Interior Ministry spokesman told the BBC.

Police say the young girl was confused and in a state of shock after she was caught.

An Afghan soldier noticed the girl wearing the suicide jacket and alerted others, according to Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi.

Afghan authorities say the girl may not have been able to operate the button to detonate the explosives, or was captured before she could execute the attack.

The girl has now been transferred to the provincial capital of Lashkar Gah. It’s unclear what charges or punishment she will face.
