Chinese state media say a U.S. stunt pilot is missing and his Chinese translator dead after their aircraft crashed into a lake in the country's northeast.

The official Xinhua News Agency said the accident involving David Riggs took place around 1 p.m. on Tuesday outside Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning province.

Xinhua says Riggs had been flying a high-performance Lancair plane belonging to his California-based MACH 1 aerobatic team. It says rescuers are still searching for Riggs while an investigation into the crash ias under way.

Riggs' website lists him as a Hollywood stunt pilot and holder of several world aviation speed records. It said he became the first American to fly from a Chinese military base since World War II during the 2010 China International Air Races.
