Egyptian courts to hear cases against Mubarak, leaders of Muslim Brotherhood

Ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is being taken by helicopter to a Cairo courthouse to face retrial in connection with the killings of protesters in 2011, the same day as a separate court is to begin proceedings against leaders of his archrival, the Muslim Brotherhood, on similar charges.

Police said the deposed president was on a helicopter taking off Sunday from a military hospital headed to a police academy in east Cairo. His retrial began in April, but this is his first appearance since he was released last week from prison and transferred to house arrest in the hospital.

The Brotherhood leaders are charged in connection with killings during June 30 protests that led to the overthrow of President Mohammed Morsi, who hails from the Islamist group.
