Advertising guru Charles Saatchi received a police caution after admitting that he assaulted his wife Nigella Lawson during an argument outside a London restaurant.

Metropolitan Police released a statement saying: "This afternoon, Monday 17 June, a 70-year-old man voluntarily attended a central London police station and accepted a caution for assault.

"Officers from the Community Safety Unit at Westminster were aware of the Sunday People article which was published on Sunday 16 June and carried out an investigation."

The Sunday paper showed pictures of the famed art collector apparently with his hand around his wife's throat.

Police would not name the man, but media outlets including Sky News reported that it was Saatchi.

Saatchi claims that the incident was a "playful tiff".
