After attempting to cut his arms off with multiple handsaws at a home improvement store, a man in California finds himself in critical condition but alive, thanks to Pasadena Fire Captain Art Hurtado, NBC 6 Los Angeles is reporting.

Hurtado was shocked when he was shopping with his wife and came across the victim — he quickly jumped in to help.

"We are always in work mode," said Hurtado. "As soon as I threw my keys to my wife, she saw the work and the stride that I had. And she knew, I'm working."

Shortly after Hurtado interfered, police officers appeared on the scene as well.

"The officers had already found a man face down, and the whole store is in chaos," Hurtado said.

"People just couldn’t believe it," said Captain Rudy López, who is a member of the West Covina Police Department.

“He walked into the saw area, picked up a couple of saws in the saw area and started cutting both of his arms,” she added.

Hurtado said he was worried the man’s actions would lead to “a crime scene and a fatality."

"I barely had a pulse and he was just barely breathing," Hurtado said, adding that he knew he could not give up on the injured man.

"I can save this guy, if I engage, that’s what we do," he said.

The 21-year-old firefighter said it seems like the victim wanted to cut "all the way down to the bone," with multiple saws.

"It was a godsend," said López. "He happened to be at the right place at the right time, probably saved his life."
