China removes 1,000 dead ducks found in river

First dead pigs, now dead ducks.

Around 1,000 of the birds were fished out of the Nanhe River in southwest China after authorities spent weeks removing 16,000 pig corpses from another river that supplies drinking water to Shanghai.

Officials discovered the ducks in 50 woven bags last Tuesday, but said local residents and animals were not at any health risk, the BBC reports.

Liang Weidong, director of publicity for Pengshan County, where the ducks were found, told China National Radio that the corpses had originated upstream and weren’t dumped by farmers in the area.

Weidong added that the cause of death is unknown, the BBC reports.
