New Jersey, amusement rides that once crowned a pier in Seaside Heights were dumped into the ocean, some homes were smashed, and others were partially buried in sand.
The well known town and historic boardwalk of Seaside Heights, New Jersey, loved by generations of families as a popular summer vacation spot, has been washed away by Hurricane Sandy.
Besides ravaging beaches, the storm swept homes off their foundations in some coastal communities, wrecked some boardwalks and knocked amusement park rides from piers in Seaside Heights.

The famous roller coaster on the fun time pier has plunged into the sea.
A merry go round that has gone round for 99 years is destroyed. The bumper cars and the ferris wheel have crashed together, and the boardwalk is gone.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie addressed reporters Wednesday and below are his comments on the devastation that has ravaged the boardwalk in Seaside Heights.
"The pier with the rides where I took my kids this August before the Republican Convention, where I got into my famous yelling match with the guy with my ice cream cone - those rides are in the Atlantic Ocean. The log fume is in the Atlantic Ocean, the log fume my two younger kids rode this summer is in the Atlantic Ocean. The roller coaster...it almost looks like the pier came up from underneath it and it just fell onto the oceanfloor and stayed almost fully constructed."
"It was an overwhelming afternoon for me emotionally as a kid who was born and raised in the state, and who spent a lot of time over my life both my childhood and my adult life at the Jersey Shore."
"We'll rebuild it, no question in my mind we'll rebuild it, but for those of us who are my age, it won't be the same."
Debris, damage, and lingering floodwaters have hindered recovery efforts in New Jersey a day after Gov. Christie said the state should start thinking about rebuilding.
