In Texas, Republican challenger Bill Flores, an oil and gas executive in his first run for office, defeated veteran Democratic Rep. Chet Edwards in District 17.

Edwards had served 20 years in Congress. With 44 percent of the precincts reporting, Flores had 61 percent of the vote, Edwards trailed with 38 percent.

Lydia Camarillo, vice president of the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project (SVREP), the nation’s largest and oldest Latin voter participation organization, said between 850,000 and 1 million Latino voters had been expected to cast their votes in these mid-term elections.
