KABUL, Afghanistan-- Militants in southern Afghanistan have killed three police officers in a roadside bomb attack that targeted a district police chief.

Officials say the chief wasn't in the car.

A government official in charge of the water supply in a district in Kandahar province was shot dead. Insurgents have stepped up attacks on government workers in response to increased pressure from international troops.

Afghan and coalition forces are in the third phase of an operation in and around the city of Kandahar, the birthplace of the Taliban.

A NATO service member also died today following a bomb attack in southern Afghanistan. The coalition did not provide the service member's nationality.
