Atlanta police say one of their officers shot and killed and a man they say was trying to break into cars in the parking deck of an apartment complex.

Police say the shooting happened early Thursday in northeast Atlanta, when an off-duty officer spotted a person acting suspiciously in the parking area.

Atlanta police Maj. Adam Lee III tells WSB-TV that the off-duty officer called for backup and chased the man, who got into a vehicle.

Lee tells CBS 46 that one of the on-duty Atlanta officers called to the scene fired his gun and struck the suspect in the head, causing him to wreck his vehicle. He later died at a hospital.

Police didn't immediately identify the suspect or the officer who shot him.
