New York City police have notified the FBI's Joint Terrorist Task Force about a confrontation that left two New York City police officers recovering from gunshot wounds.

A spokesman for the New York Police Department said the notification was made as a precaution while investigators continue to try to piece together exactly what happened early Saturday morning. The FBI didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Officers William Reddin and Andrew Yurkiw were shot around 3:30 a.m. after approaching a suspect in Brooklyn. Both are expected to make a full recovery.

Police said the officers heard gunfire and then saw the suspect, Jamal Funes, point a revolver before ramming his vehicle into a patrol car.

Funes was shot several times and was in critical condition. It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney who could comment.

A man who police say was involved in a confrontation that left two New York City officers with gunshot injures had served time in prison.

Records show the man was released from prison in 2010 after being convicted of attempted assault in Brooklyn. At the time, he used the name Fredrick Funes. He's now known as Jamal Funes.

A police spokesman confirmed the records obtained by The Associated Press are for the man in custody Saturday.

The exchange with Funes began around 3:30 a.m. after officers heard gunfire and saw Funes point a revolver.

Police say he crashed his car into a police vehicle. Two officers were shot during the confrontation. Both are expected to make a full recovery.

Funes is in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds.

Investigators are working to pinpoint who fired, when and whether police themselves fired any of the shots that injured two officers in a confrontation with a suspect in New York City.

It's standard for police shooting investigations to look into the possibility of what's known as "friendly fire."

Police Commissioner William Bratton said Saturday's shooting in Brooklyn was complex and involved eight officers.

He says multiple officers fired after Funes pointed a gun at police, drove away and rammed a police car.

Authorities say two New York City Police Department officers and another man have been shot in Brooklyn.

A spokesman for the NYPD says the officers were shot just before 3:30 a.m. Saturday and transported to Kings County Hospital. The officers' injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. No other information was released.

Officials said the other shooting victim was transported to Brookdale Hospital. There was no word on his condition.

Police did not immediately release details about the shooting.
