Police say an unarmed suspect was shot and killed by a New York City police officer during a struggle following a car chase that started in the city and ended in a neighboring suburban county

It began shortly before noon on Tuesday when uniformed officers on patrol spotted a Nissan sedan driving recklessly in the Bronx and tried to pull it over.

The driver refused to stop and led officers on a pursuit into the City of Yonkers in nearby Westchester County.

The car crashed into several vehicles and the driver ran into nearby woods with officers in pursuit.

Police say a struggle ensued and one of the officer's guns discharged, striking the man in the torso. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

No weapon was recovered.
