A vigil is planned for the Vermont Department for Children and Families social worker who was gunned down as she left her office in Barre.

DCF workers and members of the Vermont State Employees Association will gather at Old Labor Hall in Barre at 4 p.m. Sunday and march to Barre Place, where Lara Sobel was shot to death Friday afternoon as she left her office.

Police have charged 40-year-old Jody Herring with first-degree murder, and they say she is suspected in the killings of three of her relatives earlier Friday.

Officials say Sobel was involved in the case in which Herring lost custody of her 9-year-old daughter, who remains in state care.

It was not immediately known if Herring has a lawyer who could comment on her behalf.
