A San Francisco Bay Area man has been charged with two counts of murder in a vehicle crash into an apartment complex that killed a woman and her toddler daughter.

The Alameda County District Attorney's office also has charged 35-year-old Brian Zachary Jones with two counts of felony driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury. Authorities say he was driving his Corvette between 75 and 99 mph.

The crash occurred May 3 in a San Francisco suburb. Police say Jones lost control near a curve and smashed into the apartment complex as the mother and child walked outside.

The two killed were Esperanza Morales and her 14-month-old daughter.

Jones' attorney Ernesto Castillo says his client "never intended to kill anyone and did not have malice in his heart." He says Jones is remorseful, and the crash was a "tragic accident, not murder."
