The deputy U.S. marshal killed in a shootout was expecting a child with his wife, who learned the day after his death that their baby is a boy.

Josie Wells was killed Tuesday in the shootout with a man suspected of killing two siblings outside a nightclub. The suspect also was shot. He died Wednesday.

Channing Wells, wife of 27-year-old Josie Wells, says she had encouraged him to look beyond local police departments to service as a marshal. Wells was the first deputy marshal killed in the line of duty since 2011.

Wells was from a law enforcement family. His father says he, his brother, and his three surviving sons all are in the field, and a daughter is studying criminal justice.

Josie Wells was from suburban Jackson, Mississippi. Funeral arrangements are pending.
