DETROIT – Prosecutors are seeking a prison sentence of at least 17 years for a Detroit-area man convicted of murder for killing an unarmed woman on his porch.
Theodore Wafer, of Dearborn Heights, returns to Wayne County court next Wednesday. Prosecutors say in a court filing that the sentencing guidelines for second-degree murder call for a minimum punishment of 15 to 25 years in prison.
That would be in addition to an automatic two-year prison sentence for unlawful use of a gun.
The 55-year-old Wafer could be released by the Michigan parole board after he serves whatever minimum sentence is ordered by Judge Dana Hathaway.
Wafer shot Renisha McBride last Nov. 2. He says it was self-defense in response to her pounding at his doors. The jury disagreed.
