The state medical examiner plans to conduct autopsies on the bodies of five family members found shot to death in an apartment in southern Maine.

Three children ages 4, 7 and 12 were among the victims discovered Sunday afternoon when a maintenance worker was asked to check on the family. A detective said murder-suicide was one of the scenarios being investigated.

Investigators say it appears no one outside the family was responsible for the shootings, believed to have happened Saturday night.

Neighbors described the family as friendly. They said the three children were part of a group of kids that enjoyed playing outside.

Autopsies will be conducted on Monday.
