Detroit-area man who killed woman on porch: 'I didn't know there was a round in there'

DETROIT – A suburban Detroit man who killed an unarmed woman on his porch told police that he didn't know there was a round in the shotgun.

Prosecutors on the second day of trial Thursday played a recording of Theodore Wafer's remarks to officers made immediately after they arrived at his Dearborn Heights home last Nov. 2.

Wafer told police that when he opened the door he didn't recognize the woman, and that he didn't know the gun he fired was loaded.

The 55-year-old Wafer is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 19-year-old Renisha McBride. He claims it was an act of self-defense.

McBride was shot in the face while on Wafer's porch around 4:30 a.m. on Nov. 2. They didn't know each other.
