Teen who sued parents files restraining order on boyfriend
Rachel Canning's relationship led to initial falling out with parents
The New Jersey teen who made headlines when she sued her parents for child support after moving out of their home was back in court Wednesday, this time to obtain a temporary restraining order against her boyfriend, The Star-Ledger reported.
Rachael Canning, the honor student who sued her parents earlier this year for $650 a week, the remainder of her Catholic school tuition and attorney fees, obtained the order against her beau, Lucas Kitzmiller, 18. He was the teen her parents reportedly asked her to stop seeing at the time of the initial suit.
Canning's father said Kitzmiller choked her early Sunday morning during a heated argument, The Daily Record reported.
Kitzmiller also obtained a temporary restraining order against Canning, The Star-Ledger reported, citing a court listing.
The two appeared Wednesday in Morristown family court, but the hearing was delayed until August because one other the attorneys was in Cleveland, the report said.
The judge asked the two "not to publicize the case," the report said.
"This is a private matter," Sean Canning, the girl's father, told The Star-Ledger. "We're confident the court will handle it appropriately. We want to let everything die down and go back to our private lives."
Canning gained notoriety after she claimed her parents threw her out when she turned 18. But they claimed she voluntarily left their Lincoln Park home in October because she didn't want to abide by their household rules.
She dropped her suit in March and has since returned home.
Canning announced on Facebook that she plans to attend Western New England University as a biomedical engineering major and has won a $56,000 scholarship.
