Police say a man killed by a commuter train in suburban Philadelphia was texting a friend when he was struck while walking on the tracks.

Twenty-year-old Andre Washington of Jenkintown was hit around 4 p.m. Monday by an westbound train on the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority's West Trenton Regional Rail line.

Abington Township police said Washington was texting a friend he was walking to meet.

The train conductor told investigators that the man had his back turned to the oncoming train and never turned around or appeared to notice that the train was coming.

The conductor says he continuously blew the horn and locked up the brakes but couldn't stop in time.

Washington was pronounced dead at the scene.
