Indie developer Lab Zero Games announced that its next game is Indivisible, a side-scrolling action-RPG inspired by classics like Valkyrie Profile and Super Metroid.
Indivisible is the follow-up to Lab Zero's Skullgirls, a multiplatform 2D fighter featuring a cast a outlandish heroines. Skullgirls is known for its vibrant art style and fluid animation, and Indivisible will likely follow suit with a similar aesthetic.
Indivisible tells the story of Ajna, a young woman who possesses supernatural powers. Ajna sets out on a globe-spanning quest to discover the origins of her powers, and she'll team up with similarly gifted teammates along the way. Given that Lab Zero cites Super Metroid as inspiration, gameplay will likely involve unlocking new gameplay areas and content through newly acquired character abilities and upgrades throughout the quest.
Lab Zero additionally revealed that Indivisible is scored by Hiroki Kikuta, noted composer of the classic Squaresoft RPG Secret of Mana and its (fantastic and never officially English language localized) sequel Seiken Densetsu 3. Kikuta also recently signed on as the composer for RosePortal Games' crowdfunded RPG Unraveled: Tale of the Shipbreaker's Daughter.
Launched in 2012, Lab Zero's previous work Skullgirls is a 2D fighting game with an all-female cast. Inspired by tag team-based fighters like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and SNK's The King of Fighters series, Skullgirls found its own voice within an established genre with unique features like combo loop detection and customizable character assist attacks.
After a brief delisting on Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network due to publisher conflict, Skullgirls resurfaced in 2014 as Skullgirls Encore, an overhauled expansion featuring new playable characters. Skullgirls is currently available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC platforms, and is playable at select Japanese arcades via the NESiCAxLive digital distribution service. A remastered edition, Skullgirls: 2nd Encore, is due to hit the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita this month.
Target platforms for Indivisible were not announced, and a release date is not yet known. A crowdfunding campaign will launch later this year.
