DETROIT – A volunteer organizer for Detroit's Belle Isle Aquarium is disputing reports that vandalism caused the deaths of about 60 fish on the weekend that the island park is hosting the Grand Prix.
Jennifer Boardman tells the Detroit Free Press "there was no forced entry, no broken window" and no sign of a crime.
She says some fish died in one tank, something she says happens occasionally in fish tanks. Boardman was secretary of Friends of Belle Isle Aquarium, now part of the Belle Isle Conservancy.
Broadcast reports Saturday said that volunteers found the fish dead and blamed it on vandalism.
A fundraiser last week raised money to reopen the historic building, which closed in 2005.
The Belle Isle Grand Prix was held Sunday afternoon.
