Verizon Eyeing Droid X Phone Giveaway?

Eagle-eyed netizens have uncovered a secret Twitter account in an ad for Verizon's upcoming Droid phones -- which may just lead to free cell phones.

Motorola and Verizon are preparing for the launch of the Droid X, a new cell phone powered by the Google Android operating system. The two technology companies intend the phone to compete with the Apple iPhone -- and plan to launch it on June 23, the day before Apple's next iPhone goes on sale.

And to hype the phone even more, it appears Verizon is launching an online game and giving away free phones.

Bloggers at cell phone enthusiast site BerryScoop.com point out a scene from the latest ad for the Motorola Droid X in which the reflection of a Twitter account is seen in the close up shot of an eyeball.

The account, @DroidLanding, doesn't have any posts just yet, but it's very clearly an official site, even though it isn't linked anywhere from the Verizon website, of course. But the account's "bio" reveals the secret:  "The next generation of [Droid] is coming soon, but you might get yours before that. Droid X phones are hidden across the country. Follow us for clues."

Tech enthusiasts at Engadget have already reviewed the phone, describing it in depth (the site also calls it "one of the worst kept smartphone secrets in recent memory"). The site is excited by the promise of the new gadget, noting the snappy performance, a funky custom interface, a crisp 4.3-inch screen, among other tech features.

"Call it a superphone or a mega-smartphone, but the 4.3-inch handset is absolutely Verizon / Motorola's answer to the HTC EVO 4G, and makes the Droid Incredible look like a bench warmer," Engadget wrote.

It sounds like Verizon may have a hit on its hands.

The account has 527 followers already. Will it be a day-of-launch giveaway? Or will there be a game of sorts as Verizon teases out information about the hidden phones' locations?
