Now some fresh pickings from the Political Grapevine:

To Russia, With Love

Indiana's two U.S. senators are trying to secure federal money for a company with ties to Russia. The Washington Times reports Republican Richard Lugar and Democrat Evan Bayh have obtained $6.5 million in earmarks so far for a New York-based firm to manufacture lithium-ion batteries at a facility in Noblesville, Indiana. It could create as many as 3,000 jobs. But the fact that the company has Russian investors, including a key ally to President Dmitry Medvedev, has prompted concerns.

Former Reagan administration official Frank Gaffney describes as "insanity" any plan that would allow "building a national battery infrastructure in the pockets of the oligarchs of the past and future Soviet Union." California Republican congressman Duncan Hunter says it presents "significant security concerns" that need to be examined.

But Lugar's office told The Times the senator is not worried about government money going to a Russian-connected company. Bayh's office did not respond to our request for comment.

What the Doctor Ordered?

As President Obama attempts to overhaul health care reform, the health care industry is spending more than ever on lobbyists.

The Washington Post reports health care companies are doling out more than $1.4 million each day. The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America doubled its lobbyist spending to nearly $7 million in the first quarter of this year, followed by Pfizer, at more than $6 million.

Telling Secrets

And finally, a security breach that could make James Bond choke on his shaken martini. The wife of the newly appointed chief of MI6, that's the real-life spy agency that the fictional Bond works for, well she posted pictures of her husband and family details on Facebook.

That information ended up in newspapers, including shots of Sir John Sawers posing with his children, wearing a Santa hat, and playing on the beach. Some politicians called the pictures a security lapse.

Others said they only revealed a few embarrassing personal details. "It's not a state secret that he wears Speedo swimming trunks," says Foreign Secretary David Miliband. But this is just the latest in a string of embarrassing security blunders by British officials.
