Remains found near a campsite in the San Bernardino Mountains have been identified as those of a nine-year-old boy who disappeared last July.

The skull and other bones belonging to David Gonzales (search) were found by hikers Sunday at the Hanna Flat Campground (search).

David's family was staying at the campground when the boy went to their truck on July 31st to get cookies. He never returned.

Fish and Game biologist Doug Updike says David may have been killed by a mountain lion, although the boy's father says he suspects his son may have been abducted by a sex offender.

Coroner's officials will conduct additional searches of the area to collect more forensic evidence and also additional examinations of the remains to try to determine the cause of death.
