An Iraqi freelance television cameraman was killed Monday while filming clashes between U.S. troops and insurgents in a city west of Baghdad (search), police and hospital officials said.

Diaa Najm, in his early 40s, was shot in the head and the back on a street near his home in Ramadi, about 70 miles west of Baghdad, police Capt. Naser Abdullah said.

His body lay in the street for nearly an hour before rescuers could retrieve it, witnesses said.

Najm, who provided footage to Associated Press Television News and others, was believed to be the 24th journalist killed in Iraq this year.
