They say the best defense is a great offense and boy, doesn't Saddam Hussein (search) know it!
Did you see the video of him at this court appearance Thursday? He was feisty. He was angry. He was shocked and, apparently, he was still convinced he was leading Iraq.
The delusional grandeur not withstanding, you have to admire the guy for chutzpah.
Never mind that he killed thousands, some say millions, and that his whole government was an evil sham. Just call the guys judging you a sham.
Slobodan Milosevic (search) did the same after the whole Bosnia mess. And remember General Noriega? He called his accusers puppets.
All proud men — angry men — suddenly dealing with being very out-of-power men.
And they don't like it. Not one bit.
Like the CEO who's dragged out of his company in handcuffs. Or the hot-shot investment manager who's found to have embezzled millions.
They are shocked and appalled. I think, because they're suddenly humbled and humiliated. Hell hath no fury like a dictator scorned.
Saddam probably figures he's toast. So why not go out as he came in: a pompous, self-centered jerk.
He lived that way. Now, I guess, he wants to die that way.
I say, who are we to refuse him?
