And now the most riveting two minutes in television, the latest from the political grapevine:

The Scope of Roe v. Wade

Speakers at yesterday's pro-choice demonstration in Washington, which drew as many as 1 million marchers by some accounts, claimed that the U.S. Supreme Court is -- "one vote away from going back to" the days when women didn't have the choice to legally have an abortion.

But, according to the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg Public Policy Center, only three of the current nine justices have ever voted to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade (search) decision legalizing abortion. What's more, repealing Roe v. Wade wouldn't by any means outlaw a woman's right to choose, it would just give states the authority to rule on the legality of abortion.

Gorelick's Personal Self Interest?

After 11 Republicans from the Senate made an unsuccessful attempt to have 9-11 commission member and former Deputy Attorney General Jamie Gorelick testify before the commission, 23 Republicans from the House are now calling for her to testify. But the 23 Republicans -- led by Ginny Brown-Waite from Florida -- also want Gorelick to resign from the commission altogether, saying -- "she is clearly ... unable to serve as a disinterested party [and] ... has a personal self interest in the final outcome of this panel's report."

Meanwhile, Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn -- one of the 11 senators -- and Republican South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham are now asking the Justice Department to produce any records relating to Gorelick's tenure as President Clinton's deputy attorney general.

More Poll Results

A new Marist College poll shows that, in a nation-wide head-to-head challenge held today, President Bush would edge out John Kerry by a margin of 47 to 44 percent. But inside the 17 so-called battleground states, those numbers are flipped, with Kerry edging out President Bush.

Kerry loses that edge in the battleground states, though, when Ralph Nader enters the race, tying President Bush at 45 percent. In addition, the poll shows that significantly more Democrats want Kerry to pick John Edwards as his running mate than any other Democrat.

Terrorists Targeting Lower Manhattan?

Two weeks ago, we noted that a Washington Post report said an August 6, 2001, memo warned President Bush -- "terrorists might be preparing for a hijacking in the United States and might be targeting a building in Lower Manhattan." The memo, in fact, said no such thing, and didn't even mention Manhattan.

Well, the New York Times has now issued a correction for a similar error. But the Washington Post, whose own ombudsman criticized the Post's report, has yet to issue a correction.
