We're living in difficult times, morally speaking. That is the subject of this evening's Talking Points Memo.
Well, corruption has screwed up the Olympics. A French judge has been removed after she admitted to being dishonest in judging the pairs figure skating competition. Canadians Jamie Sale and David Pelletier have now been awarded a gold medal because the voting was corrupted by what the disgraced judge calls pressure from her higher-ups, whatever that means.
The Russian couple will get to keep their gold medal. So, in effect, the whole competition here is tainted.
Talking Points is happy the Canadian couple got justice, but justice is not really being done overall. The International Olympic Committee has not explained what the heck's going on, why the French judge was corrupted, who did it, and if this kind of thing is pervasive.
If fraud was committed in this case, shouldn't U.S. authorities arrest the judge? That's pretty much the only way we're going to know what happened. I don't believe for a second the International Olympic Committee is going to get to the bottom of this.
For decades, that committee has been suspect, and of course we all know about the bribery scandal that erupted four years ago when they selected Salt Lake City as the Olympic site.
It's really a shame that almost everything in our society now is under a cloud of suspicion because of all the corruption that exists in the world. Once again, Talking Points will tell you that moral relativism and political correctness have undermined our system of right and wrong, good and evil, justice and injustice.
There's an excuse for everything. I can't wait to hear the French judge's excuse.
If the Olympic Committee thinks that by awarding the gold to the Canadian skaters this is going to make things right, they're living in a fantasy world. Cynicism has now been injected into the games, and suspicion will cloak all close competitions.
The only way to stop this kind of thing, not only at the Olympics but also in the business world, in the entertainment world, in the political world, is to hunt down and prosecute the corrupters. Whoever robbed the Canadian skaters of their due should be criminally prosecuted. And since this happened on U.S. soil, we should be doing that.
But don't bet on it happening. Political correctness and fear of offending entrenched powers will most likely derail any real justice in this matter.
