How many congressional committees does it take to get to the bottom of a big corporate scandal?
Apparently about a dozen.
That's how many committees and sub-committees are looking into this Enron mess. No less than four held hearings on the issue Tuesday, some at the same time.
Something's screwy here. Can't we consolidate this?
I mean, even with Watergate we had the House Judiciary Committee doing its thing, then Sam Ervin's gang in the Senate doing theirs. That was it.
Oh sure, a lot of bluster and heat, but at least focused bluster and heat. But this go-round, I'm not so sure. I know the score. Everyone is playing to the camera and the home crowd. It's a big story. But we need order here.
This committee wants documents. Another committee demands the same documents. This committee wants to hear from Enron officials. This other committee wants to hear from them first.
It's ego. It's theater. And right now, it's a mess.
Don't get me wrong, we should investigate. But let's shut up first and grandstand less. Hearings are meant to hear, after all.
We'll get to the bottom of this, as long as some fire-breathing politicos give up trying to say they're the ones on top of this.
