There will be millions of elated Cubs fans at their long-awaited World Series victory parade in Chicago today, but don't expect Steve Bartman to be among them.
Bartman, of course, was assigned much of the blame for the Cubs' collapse in the 2003 NLCS and has been living in anonymity since that fateful night. However, the Cubs' drought-busting Game 7 victory over the Indians on Wednesday night has resulted in increased calls for Bartman not only to attend but to participate in some sort of bizarre public forgiveness ceremony.
However, a spokesman for the infamous Cubs fan says Bartman will continue to keep his distance.
"He was just overjoyed that the Cubs won, as all the Cubs fans are,'' lawyer Frank Murtha told USA Today on Thursday.
"We don't intend to crash the parade. The one thing that Steve and I did talk about was if the Cubs were to win, he did not want to be a distraction to the accomplishments of the players and the organization.''
