Speedster Terrance Gore, essentially a designated runner when the Royals are trying to scratch out a run, will not be on Kansas City's World Series roster. Shortstop Raul Mondesi, the club's top prospect but who has never played above the Double A level, will.
The Royals announced their 25-man roster for the World Series, and there was only one change from the American League Championship Series roster. Gore, who appeared in one game each in the ALCS and the AL Division Series, was removed in favor of Mondesi, whose contract was selected from Double A Northwest Arkansas.
At this stage of his career, the 20-year-old Mondesi is more accomplished with his glove than bat. He batted .243 with six homers and 33 RBIs in 81 games at Northwest Arkansas this season. While he doesn't have Gore's speed, he did steal 19 bases in 2015.
The Royals haven't made extensive use of their bench so far in the playoffs, but Mondesi can help provide support if needed in the middle of the infield and also pinch run.
To make room for Mondesi on the 40-man roster, the Royals designated right-handed pitcher Joba Chamberlain for assignment.
