BARNSLEY, England (AP) Everton needed extra time to beat third-tier Barnsley 5-3 and reach the third round of the League Cup on Wednesday in another high-scoring game in the competition.

Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku's 78th-minute goal took the game into extra time at 3-3 as Everton recovered from going 2-0 down after 28 minutes.

An own goal and Lukaku's second goal of the match secured Everton a match against second-tier Reading.

Sunderland's 6-3 win over Exeter was the highlight on Tuesday, when the other second-round games were played.

Defender John Stones, a reported transfer target of Chelsea, played the full 120 minutes for Everton.

''I thought that John Stones was incredible under enormous pressure,'' Everton manager Roberto Martinez said. ''I think that the authorities need to look at what has gone on.''
