NEW YORK (AP) Baltimore Orioles utility man Steve Pearce has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained muscle on his left side.

The move is retroactive to July 19 and it opens a roster spot for pitcher Kevin Gausman, who was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to start Wednesday night against the New York Yankees.

Pearce is batting .227 with seven home runs and 24 RBIs. He has started 16 games at first base, 13 at second, 12 in left field and five in right.

Pearce says he's been getting treatment on his sore oblique for a couple of days and ''it's time to take care of it.'' He planned to travel back to Baltimore on Wednesday night to be examined and make sure the injury isn't severe.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter says Pearce suggested the move, knowing the team needed to clear space for Gausman.
